~~Seminar Review~~
Master At Arms: James A. Keating and Combat Technologies presented a "free" seminar at Comtech H.Q. nestled in the Blue Mountains of Oregon. Jim said to me "I just want to give back to all those who have given so much to me over the years." Hence the "freebe", no charge, just show up and the next 2 days are yours for the taking, absolutely free!

O.K. I'm game, sign me up, this sounds great.

James is known world wide for his tactical edged weapon programs but has been a lifelong martial artist. 50+ years  of studying various "hard" and "soft" styles. His depth of knowledge is second to none. He has achieved what most "martial artists" only dream of or hear about in legends. Keating is the "real deal" and it shows in his words, actions, and deeds.

The topics of study for the weekend included empty hand tactics, impact weapons, edged weapons, sword and dagger, rattan ring / iron hoop training, disarms, foot traps, submissions, and much more. All topics seemed to blend effortlessly and complimented each other. We covered various arts including Kali, Silat, J.K.D, Wing Chun, Aiki Juijitsu, Tai Chi, Snake and Crane styles, and many more.

We started with a single stick and flowed into "Sumbrada" training. Both partners get quick results from this method as both are required to play offense and defense. Very cool indeed. This led us to various disarming techniques, acquired, at speed, from the sumbrada drill.

Next came Sumbrada with knife utilizing "thrusts" only. The universal principals of weapons became evident quickly to novice and advanced players alike.

After various "knife" exercises we quickly moved on to "hoop" training. Using a rattan 14" hoop for solo training has many benefits including correct line familiarity, body mechanics, and structure. Comtech offers a great video on hoop training called
Trapping 3 - Iron and rattan hoop training.

Empty hand was next. Famous drills like "Hubud Lubud" and "Lop Sao" were practiced and studied. Effortlessly blended with switches from right side to left. Very smooth and fluid with devastating results when combined with "nerve impulse reversal".

Next was a lecture on edged weapons featuring a "sub-hilt" style handle. Keating has a new sub-hilt fighting knife out and I would suggest you contact him personally to discuss the details and how you can get your hands on one of these.

Day 2 began with an in-depth look at the classic Sword and Dagger (S&D) methods. Most of the morning was spent studying S&D Sets and acquiring disarms from those. A short form was included (Taiyata). S&D practice encompasses the foundation of all 2 handed weapon movement. Then the fun part - disarming the opponent, trapping and submitting. Very cool and very rare!
Comtech also offers video instruction of Sword and Dagger techniques. I highly recommend these for your  personal library.

Last but not least SUBMISSIONS, the current "craze" of MMA. We covered submissions while standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone. Keatings knowledge of the Snake and Crane arts allows one to use effortless power to achieve these. Instead of revealing all the secrets, I will direct your attention to the various pictures and ask you to "see" into them for the essence of these submissions. The old saying is a picture is worth 1000 words.

Everyone in attendance was treated to a real, dynamic weekend filled with martial insights of the highest caliber. The instruction was professional and top tier. To all those who missed out, you missed a good one!
See ya at the next James Keating / Comtech seminar.
